This interactive course introduces the physical therapist to current issues inhuman sexual health today. Attendees will realize the vital role a physical therapist plays in making sexual health an integral part of total patient care. A focus for the day is to help participants increase their comfort level in talking with clients about sexual problems. Participants will gain an understanding of female and male anatomy and physiology, sexual response cycle, and current sexual concerns of clients that they may see in their practice today. This seminar will be packed with practical information that you will be able to take home and apply in your work. This one day course will give the PTA a working knowledge of pelvic floor therapy including: bladder training, EMG biofeedback, and the coordination of the abdominals and pelvic floor. The course will also include a review of anatomy of the pelvic floor, the physiology of micturition and the types of urinary incontinence. Participants will have the opportunity to practice with EMG equipment and practice bladder training instruction. Upon completion of this course, you'll be able to: 1) Apply an understanding of the physiology of micturition to patient care for urinary incontinence. 2) Provide patient instructions in bladder training and fluid modifications. 3) Maximize patient success during EMG biofeedback with proper equipment set up and patient instructions. 4) Explain the relationship of the abdominals and pelvic floor muscles and their impact on exercises and activities of daily living. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the Female Athlete Triad, biomechanical, neurological, and other training issues to decrease injury and increase athletic performance. Sports Nutrition for optimal health and performance enhancement for the Female Athlete will also be discussed. The latest data and applicable information for the clinician regarding issues and assessment methods to identify athletes at high-risk for the Triad will be presented. This course will also assist clinicians develop screening programs to recognize and minimize poor nutrition, identify abnormal menstrual and bone health, and address deficits in muscular performance, with the ultimate goal of minimizing the incidence of musculoskeletal injury. Upon completion of this course, you'll be able to: 1) Discuss the prevalence of disordered eating/eating disorders in various female athlete populations, athletes most at risk, current behavioral and pathological risk factors, current health profession position stands of disordered eating, and the PT's role in managing nutritional concerns in female athletes. 2) Discuss the prevalence of menstrual dysfunction in various female athlete populations, current behavioral, pathological, and biological risk factors, current health profession position stands' of menstrual dysfunction criterions for athletes and identify athletes most at risk. 3) Discuss the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) levels and stress fractures in various female athlete populations, athletes most at risk for low BMD and stress fracture, understand current biological and pathological risk factors for low BMD (osteopenia/osteoporosis) and stress fracture, current health profession position stands' criterions of low BMD and stress fracture, and issues related to low BMD and stress fracture in female athletes. 4) Describe the effects of high carbohydrate and high protein diets on athletic performance, supplemental facts and fallacy, diet programs to help avoid low energy nutritional imbalances that may affect menstrual and bone processes, and counsel athletes on nutrition to prevent overtraining syndrome. 5) Identify and correct biomechanical deficits in performance of UE tasks (throwing) and LE tasks (jumping, cutting, landing, etc) and relate core performance to proper performance of all UE and LE tasks.
